On May 6th the Temiskaming Foundation hosted its second annual Grant Presentation Event. Held at the Englehart Curling Club, more than $240,000 in grants were awarded in support of local theatres, museums, youth sports, libraries, legions, hospitals, and more! In attendance were twenty-two nonprofit organizations, charities and municipalities, as well as fund holders, board members, committee members and scholarship recipients. In addition to presenting more than 30 grants, the event recognized the incredible effort that local organizations put in to make our communities great places to live.
For the first time, awards were granted from the North Star Fund to three recipients. Established in 2024 to honour the life of Eva May Greary, the Fund awards scholarships to support young people in following their dreams through further education to achieve a dream or ambition.
During the event, Executive Director Brigid Wilkinson provided an update on the upcoming 2026 Vital Signs report and the results of the community survey conducted earlier this year. In 2021, the Foundation published its first Vital Signs report, to encourage dialogue and action from all segments of the community, including residents, organizations, institutions, and political leaders. The 2026 Report, to be published this Fall will cover the following topics: Employment & Economy, Education & Lifelong Learning, Environment & Sustainability and Standard of Living.
“Our goal at the Temiskaming Foundation is to empower organizations who are looking to make Timiskaming a better place to live. The collaborative relationships we foster within our local communities is vital in doing so and the grant presentation event is a way to celebrate those connections”, said Chris Oslund, Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors.
To date in 2026, the Temiskaming Foundation has granted more than $493,000.00 in operational funding, project grants and scholarships throughout the District of Timiskaming. The next round of grant applications will take place in September.
